Solanum elaeagnifolium
Σολάνο το αγριελιόφυλλο
“Solanum” in Latin means “deadly nightshade” and “elaeagnifolium” means “leaves of oleaster”. Solanum elaeagnifolium is an invader in the Cypriot nature; it is a naturalized invasive plant that exists in many regions of Cyprus, but yet, it is not that common. It will not be seen in the Western Paphos, Kyrenia regions, or the Karpasia peninsula. In total there are 8 Solanum species of the Solanum genus in Cyprus. It is a drought tolerant plant with attractive flowers, and a yellow fruit that when consumed it causes gastrenteric disorders, as well as detriment in the human’s nervous system. That is probably why in South Africa they call it “Satan’s bush”. Common names in English are Silver-leaved nightshade, Purple nightshade, White horsenettle and Tomato weed. In Cyprus, it blooms around May until October.
