Myrtus communis

Μερσινιά, Μύρτος ο κοινός

Etymology of Myrtus communis: The name of the genus, "Myrtus", derives from the Ancient Greek "μύρτος" [myrtos], a word which is considered a loan originating from Minor Asia. Latin "communis" means "ordinary, common", hence it is the common Myrtus species.

This is the one and only Myrtus kind/species growing in the wild Cypriot habitat.

Myrtus communis can not be considered a common plant in Cyprus, despite the fact that it exists all around the island, up to an altitude of 1525 metres. It grows on rocky slopes, woods, near streams, rivers and wetlands. Its flowering period is usually between May and October.

The plant in Cyprus produces two types of fruit, either white-green or dark blue. These fruits are edible but do not taste good.
