Malva unguiculata

Μαλάχη η νυχώδης

Etymology of Malva unguiculata

The Latin name of the genus "Malva" originates from the Ancient Greek "μαλάχη" [malache], which may derive from the verb "μαλάσσω" [malasso], meaning "to soften, soothe", referring to the leaves and an ointment made from the seeds which were supposed to be soothing to the skin. "Unguiculata" derives from Latin and means "fingernail or toenail", referring to the petals that have a claw-shaped base.

The Malva genus in Cyprus

There are at least nine Malva species in the wild Cypriot habitat.

The basics about Malva unguiculata

Malva unguiculata, commonly known as bryony-leaved tree-mallow, is a very tall perennial plant native to the East Mediterranean, including parts of Cyprus. It can grow up to 300 cm (3 meters) in height, featuring large, pink to violet flowers with pale centers, typically appearing in May-June. Its distinctive leaves are 3-5-triangular-lobed, with the end lobes significantly larger than the side ones, resembling those of bryony. The plant's stem can become somewhat woody at the base and is often covered with star-like hairs, giving it a dusty appearance. It thrives in well-draining soil and bright sunlight, commonly found in habitats like cliffs, streambanks, and roadsides at various elevations. It is generally considered a safe plant and not toxic.

Geographical expansion

Malva unguiculata is native to the East Mediterranean region, encompassing Cyprus, southern and western Turkey, the Levant (Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Jordan), and the eastern Aegean islands of Greece. It thrives in areas with a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers.

Malva unguiculata in Cyprus

Malva unguiculata is indeed a rare plant to encounter; I have encountered this species two times in six years. It does not exist in Central, Central-Western and Central-Eastern Cyprus. It appears at a low to average altitude, between 150-750 metres. Malva unguiculata's flowering period in Cyprus is between May and early June.
