Alcea rosea

Αλκαία η ροζώδης

Etymology of Alcea rosea: "Alcea" derives from the Ancient Greek female adjective "ἀλκαῖα" whim means "strong", as it is a tall, slender but strong plant. "Rosea" is the Latin female adjective meaning "rosy or pink", as the plant's petals bear many variations of pink.

Two Alcea species (a total of two kinds) exist in the Cypriot habitat.

Alcea rosea is a naturalized but non-invasive plant in the Cypriot habitat. Initially planted in gardens, it "escaped" and can be seen growing almost exclusively on roadsides. Alcea rosea is encountered on the Troodos Mountains range and surrounding village at an altitude of 1000-1200 metres, in locations such as Kato Amiantos (Lemesos 1100 metres), Kato Platres (Lemesos 1000 metres). Its flowering period is between May and September. Alcea rosea is mostly seen with light pink and dark pink flowers.
