Πλαντάγο το αφρικάνικο
Etymology of Plantago afra: The name "Plantago" derives from the Latin "planta", which means "sole" or "flat", and the suffix "-ago", meaning "resemblance", hence "resembling a sole" alluding to the leaf shape of the original plant that was the reason for the genus to be named as such. Its epithet "afra" comes from Latin and means "related to Africa", referring to the region where it is said to originate from.
At least fifteen Plantago taxa (species and subspecies) exist in the Cypriot habitat.
Plantago afra can be found in all the districts of Cyprus up to an altitude of 750 metres. It primarily grows on infertile ground, roadsides, and grassy areas. Its long flowering period is from February until June.
