Carex hispida

Κάρεξ η σκληρότριχη

Etymology of Carex hispida: The name of the genus, "Carex" is of Latin origin and it means "reed-grass, rush, or sedge". "Hispida" is the Latin for "bristly, hairy", because of the slightly prickly hairs on its spikes.

There are 12 Carex kinds (species and subspecies) in the wild Cypriot habitat, of which two of them are found exclusively in occupied northern Cyprus.

The plant does not appear in the Akamas region or the vast Mesaoria region (southeastern Cyprus, Nicosia and surrounding plains). It also seems absent from the Larnaka district. Carex hispida primarily grows in ditches, marshes and shallow water, up to an altitude of 1675 metres. Its flowering period is between March and July.
