Etymology of Lens nigricans: The name of the genus, "Lens", derives from Latin and it means "lentil". "Nigricans" is also Latin and means "blackish", referring to the color of the seed.
Four Lens kinds (all species) can be found in Cypriot nature.
Lens nigricans is a relatively uncommon plant in the Cypriot habitat. It appears in central mountainous Cyprus between an altitude of 300-1000 metres. Its flowering period is between January (sometimes as late as March) and May.
How to identify Lens nigricans:
The species has a unique feature, as the peduncle is terminating in a well-developed awn. Simply put, the flower does not appear on the edge of the peduncle but about a centimetre before that.
