Λάθυρος ο βλεφαρίκαρπος
Etymology of Lathyrus blepharicarpos: Lathyrus comes from the Ancient Greek word "Lathyros" [Λάθυρος], from the prefix "λα-" [la-] meaning "extremely," and the suffix "-θυρος" [–thyros] meaning "passionate", referring to the ancient belief in the plant's supposed aphrodisiacal powers. Blepharicarpos [Βλεφαρίκαρπος] comes from Ancient Greek "βλέφαρο" [vlepharo] meaning "eyelid" and "καρπός" [karpos] which means "fruit", referring to its fruit resembling an eyelid.
There are at least 14 Lathyrus species/kinds growing on their own in the wild Cypriot habitat. There are some additional domesticated species and subspecies growing in gardens.
This Lathyrus has a vivid orange colour and lanceolate leaves. It is not encountered in Central Cyprus or at an altitude higher than 1000 metres. It grows on (cultivated or not) grassland. Lathyrus blepharicarpos blooms between February and April.
How to identify Lathyrus blepharicarpos:
The color of its flowers distinguishes it from the rest except the red species. Compared to the red species it has very broad (the broadest) leaflets. Its pod should be hairy and obovate.
