Etymology of Samolus valerandi: The name of the genus, "Samolus" is thought to be a Latin word of Ancient Celtic origin. The Latinized epithet "valerandi" is a tribute to Douvez Valerand, a 16th-century botanist.
Samolus valerandi it the one and only species/kind which is encountered in the wild Cypriot habitat.
Synonyms: It was previously also called Anagallis aquatica and Samolus caulescens.
If to divide Cyprus into four quarters, Samolus valerandi does not appear in the southeastern quarter. It is a rare plant that primarily grows where there's lots of still water or in open forests. It appears up to an altitude of 1375 metres. Its flowering period is between April and October (following August, flowers don't appear that commonly).
