Centranthus ruber

Κέντρανθος ο κόκκινος

Etymology of Centranthus ruber: "Centranthus", the genus's name, derives from the Ancient Greek words "κέντρον" [kentron], meaning "spur", and "ανθός" [anthos], meaning "flower" and it refers to the flower having a spur-like base. "Ruber" is Latin and it means "red".

There are two Centranthus kinds in the Cypriot habitat.

Centranthus ruber is a plant which is encountered in the Troodos mountains and the Kerynia district. It is a naturalized, non-invasive plant. It grows up to an altitude of 1225 metres and its flowering period is long, between March and September. It exists in abundance in Pano and Kato Platres villages (Limassol), and I have also seen it in Pano Archimandrita village (Pafos).
