Σουαέντα η γνήσια
Etymology of Suaeda vera: The name Suaeda comes from an oral (non-literary) Arabic name for the Suaeda vera species transliterated as "suaed, sawād or suēd", and it was assigned as the genus name by the 18th-century taxonomist Peter Forsskål during his visit to the Red Sea area in the early 1760s. Latin "vera" means "actual, true, real" as this species initially represented the genus "Suaeda".
There are three Suaeda kinds in Cyprus, two species and one subspecies.
Suaeda vera appears almost all around Cyprus up to an altitude of 25 metres, but it is definitely not found in northwestern Cyprus. It appears in arid and semi-arid saltflats, salt marshes and similar habitats. Its long flowering period is between October and May.
