Etymology of Capparis spinosa: The name of the genus "capparis'' derives from the Ancient Greek "κάππαρις" which is of unknown origin. "Spinosa" is Latin and means "prickly", referring to its prickly branches.

Capparis spinosa is an extremely common plant in Cyprus, encountered everywhere at an altitude lower than 850 metres. Spinosa is the only capparis species in Cyprus. Its long flowering period begins in May and lasts until August.

Capparis spinosa in Cyprus is edible and a traditional delicacy. Its tender sprouts are placed into water and salt for a few days until the leaves turn yellow-green, and then placed in (preferably) white vinegar. The same procedure stands for its young buds and seed capsules.
