Cakile maritima

Etymology of Cakile maritima: The term "Cakile" is said to derive from Arabic and its origin is unknown. "Maritimus" is Latin and it means "maritime", referring to its growing habitat (near the sea).

The genus Cakile was published by the English botanist Philip Miller in 1754. Cakile maritima is the only Cakile species encountered in Cyprus.

It is a salt-tolerant plant, growing by the sea, commonly all around the coasts of Cyprus, at a maximum altitude of just 5 metres. Cakile maritima's flowering season is long, between January and July.
