Etymology of Asperugo procumbens: The name of the genus, "Asperugo", derives from the Latin "asper", meaning "sharp/pointed'', referring to its fruits. The genus Asperugo was published in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus. The species epithet "procumbens" is from the Latin "procumbo", meaning "to lie down, stoop down", referring to its stems.

There is one and only Asperugo taxa in the world, this one.

Asperugo procumbens, even though it is said to exist in many regions except for the one of Karpasia peninsula, is a relatively rare plant to encounter. The specimen in the pictures was found in Lania village (Lemesos district). It appears up to an altitude of 1075 metres. Its flowering period is between January and May.
