Sonchus oleraceus

Γαλατούνα, Τζιόγχος, Γαλατόχορτον, Σόγχος ο λαχανώδης

Etymology of Sonchus oleraceus: "Sonchus" was called in ancient Greece "σόγχος" [sonkhos] and "σόγκος" [sogos], but the etymology is of unknown origin (the word could be Pre-Greek). The name is nevertheless from the classical times mentioned by Theophrastus and Dioscorides. Latin "oleraceus" means "resembling garden herbs or vegetables used in cooking".

There are six kinds of Sonchus in Cyprus, three species, two subspecies and one hybrid.

Sonchus oleraceus is an extremely common plant in Cyprus encountered all around the island at an altitude of up to 1525 metres. It is the most common Sonchus kind in Cyprus. It primarily grows on cultivated land and generally on ground disturbed by humans. Its long flowering period is between February and October, and it depends on the provision of water.
