Senecio vulgaris

Σενέκιο το κοινό

Etymology of Senecio vulgaris: "Senecio" derives from Latin "senex", meaning "old/aged person", referring to the hairs attached to the ovary to aid dispersal (of the pappus) that resemble the white beard of an aged man. "Vulgaris" comes from Latin and means "common" because it is "the common Senecio kind".

There are three Senecio kinds in the wild Cypriot habitat, one species and two other subspecies.

Senecio vulgaris is the most common Senecio in Cyprus, it is found all around the island, up to an altitude of 1075 metres. It is an annual, herbaceous plant, up to 30cm tall. It primarily grows on cultivated land, roadsides and sea shores. Depending on the provision of water, it can be seen flowered all year long.
