Glebionis segetum

Μαργαρίτα, Σιμιλλόχορτον, Σίμιλλος, Σιμιλλούιν, Λάζαρος, Γλεμπιόνις η σιτόφιλη

Etymology of Glebionis segetum: The genus's name was created by Alexandre Henri Gabriel de Cassini in 1826; it derives from Latin "gleba", meaning "soil, cultivated land", referring to its initial abundant presence at the edge of the cultivated fields. Latin "segetum" means "of the grain field", referring to a common habitat where the species appears.

There are two kinds of Glebionis in the wild Cypriot habitat, one species and one variety of a second species.

Glebionis segetum is a less common plant in Cyprus compared to the coronaria subspecies. It appears up to an altitude of at least 600 metres (usually up to 300 metres, the specimen in the pictures is from Filani, Nicosia district). It is said to exist all around Cyprus but it is most likely not found in the Limassol district. Its flowering period is between January and June.

How to identify Glebionis segetum:

The leaves of Glebionis coronaria variety coronaria are bipinnatisect, whilst segetum's are simply pinnatisect, lobed or sometimes subentire. Segetum's leaves look clearly broader than the ones of coronaria and their color is not vivid or dark green as in coronaria, it is more like light sky blue.
