Etymology of Glebionis coronaria variety coronaria: The genus's name was created by Alexandre Henri Gabriel de Cassini in 1826; it derives from the Latin "gleba", meaning "soil, cultivated land", referring to its initial abundant presence at the edge of the cultivated fields. Latin "coronaria" means "connected with crowns", referring to its flower.
There are two kinds of Glebionis in the wild Cypriot habitat, one species and one variety of a second species.
Coronaria blooms for many months and it is encountered all-around lower Cyprus, at an altitude of up to 600 metres. It basically doesn't grow in the Troodos Mountains region and several surrounding mountains. It mostly grows on land disturbed by human presence/activities. It can be seen flowered all year long, depending on the provision of water.
How to identify Glebionis coronaria variety coronaria:
The leaves of Glebionis coronaria variety coronaria are bipinnatisect, whilst Glebionis segetum are simply pinnatisect, lobed or sometimes subentire.
The achenes of var. coronaria are sharply angular or compressed, conspicuously winged, whilst of segetum are terete or angular, but not winged.
