Geropogon hybridus

Γεροπώγωνας ο υβριδικός

Etymology of Geropogon hybridus: "Geropogon" compound word derives from the Ancient Greek noun "γέρος" [yeros], meaning "old man" and "πώγων" [pogon], meaning "beard", hence "old man's beard", alluding to the hairy pappus that crowns each seed. Latin "hybridus" means "hybrid".

Geropogon hybridus is the only species of this recently formed genus. Geropogon hybridus was until recently known as Tragopogon hybridus.

Geropogon hybridus is a relatively common plant in Cyprus, which appears all-around the island up to an altitude of 300 metres. It mostly grows on open, uncultivated land. Its flowering period is between February and April.
