Etymology of Carduus argentatus subspecies acicularis: The genus name Carduus is from the Latin for "a kind of thistle" or "thistlelike plant". The Latin "argentatus" means "adorned with silver", and "acicularis" means "slender as a needle".

Two (sub)species of the genus Carduus exist in the Cypriot habitat.

Carduus argentatus subspecies acicularis is a pretty common plant in Cyprus, and it exists in all the regions of the island. It can be seen up to a maximum altitude of 600 metres. Its flowering period is limited between March and May.
