Campanula peregrina

Καμπανούλα η ξενική

Etymology of Campanula peregrina: "Campanula" both in Latin and in Modern Greek "καμπανούλα" means "little bell", and it was named as such due to its bell-shaped flowers. Latin "peregrina" means "foreign, exotic".

There are six Campanula species in Cyprus, of which one grows exclusively in northern Cyprus.

Campanula peregrina is the tallest of the six species that exist in Cyprus, reaching up to 80 centimetres tall; the others are considerably shorter. Its inflorescence is narrow and spiciform. It is encountered at an altitude of up to 1375 metres, and it prefers areas where there is running water, such as streams. It is a plant growing in western Cyprus but it is mostly found in the Troodos Mountains region. Campanula peregrina is a rare plant to meet in Cyprus. Its flowering period is between July and October.
