Calendula officinalis

Καλέντουλα η φαρμακευτική

Etymology of Calendula officinalis: The genus name "Calendula" is a modern Latin diminutive of "calendae", literally translated as "the 1st of the month" in the Roman calendar, which perhaps means “every 1st of the month is bloomed”, alluding to the year-round flowering. Latin "officinalis" means that "(the herb is) officially used as a medicinal plant".

Two Calendula species exist in the wild Cyprus habitat (actually only Calendula arvensis is supposed to grow in the wild but sometimes Calendula officinalis manages to multiply away from gardens, but basically within a community's territory).

As mentioned above, Calendula Officinalis exists within communities, inside and sometimes shows up outside and nearby from houses' gardens. This basically happens mostly in the Limassol and Paphos districts, up to an altitude of 750 metres (0r even more). Its long-lasting flowering period is between February and October.
