Όρχις ο ιταλικός
Etymology of Orchis italica: The genus name Orchis derives from Ancient Greek "ὄρχις" [orchis] meaning ''testicles'', a reference to the twin tubers of orchids in this genus. It is called "italica" as it was initially recorded in Italy.
At least 5 Orchis species have been discovered to exist in Cyprus's wild habitat.
Orchis italica is a perennial tuberous plant growing up to 50m high, although it is usually reaching 25-30 centimetres. Orchis italica is a very common plant in Cyprus. This extremely aromatic orchid appears everywhere in Cyprus, except for the Mesaoria region on grasslands, garrigue, abandoned stony hillsides, roadsides, and calcareous ground, at an altitude of 100-700 metres. Orchis italica usually blooms from March until May in Cyprus.
