Etymology of Ophrys umbilicata subspecies attica: The name of the genus "Ophrys" comes from the Αncient Greek word "ὀφρύς" which means "eyebrow" and represents the hairy edge of the flower bud found in many species. "Umbilicata" is the female Latin for "navel-shaped", and Latinized "attica" means "of Attica", referring to the homonymous Greek region.
It is estimated that at least 31 Ophrys species and subspecies have been discovered in Cypriot nature so far.
It is a subspecies of the umbilicata family. It was previously known as Ophrys flavomarginata. It is encountered in all the regions of the island. Ophrys umbilicata subsp. attica is a common orchid found in low altitudes of up to 550 metres and it blossoms between January and April.
