Ophrys argolica subspecies elegans

Μελισσούι, Όφρυς της αργολίδας υποείδος η κομψή

Etymology of Ophrys argolica subspecies elegans: The name of the genus "Ophrys" comes from the ancient Greek word "ὀφρύς" that means "eyebrow" and represents the hairy edge of the flower bud found in many species. "Argolica" is related to Argolis [Αργολίδα], a district in the Peloponnesus, Greece. "Elegans" is the Latin for "elegant".

It is estimated that at least 31 Ophrys species, subspecies and hybrids have been discovered in Cypriot nature so far.

Ophrys argolica subsp. elegans is according to the flora scientists the only argolica (sub)species in Cyprus, hence, due to the pattern on the lip and the long petals, it's easy to be recognised. It is popular, found in all the regions of Cyprus except for that of Paralimni. It is often found under cistus, Pistacia lentiscus, cypresses and pine trees. Ophrys argolica subsp. elegans's flowering period is between January and March. Altitude about up to 500 metres.
