Iris florentina

Ίριδα φλορεντίνα

Etymology of Iris florentina: In Ancient Greek mythology, "Iris" was the goddess of rainbows. The plant was named either after her or after the word "ἶρις" [iris], meaning "rainbow", because of its flowers' many different colour varieties. The epithet "florentina" refers to Florence of Italy, where most likely it was initially recorded.

There are two Iris naturalized species in Cypriot nature.

Iris florentina is a Cyprus naturalized, non-invasive, non-endemic plant, also known as Iris germanica nothovar florentina. It is encountered exclusively at medium to high altitudes in the Troodos region and surroundings. It blossoms from March till May.
