Gladiolus trifyllus

Γλαδίολος ο τρίφυλλος

Etymology of Gladiolus trifyllus: Latin "gladiolus" diminutive of "gladius" (sword), meaning "little sword", alluding to the leaf shape. Its epithet derives from Ancient Greek ''τρίφυλλος" [trifyllos], meaning "three-leaved" because its leaves are usually 3 (or 4).

Two Gladiolus species can be found in the Cypriot wild habitat.

Gladiolus trifyllus is an uncommon plant of the Cypriot nature, much less popular that its sibling Gladiolus italicus. It can be encountered all around Cyprus -except for the Morfou region- at a maximum altitude of 1225 metres. Gladiolus trifyllus mostly grows in cultivated and uncultivated fields, as well as in prairies. Its flowering period in Cyprus is between March and May.
