Allium trifoliatum

Άλλιο το τριφυλλοειδές

Etymology of Allium trifoliatum: The generic name "Allium" is of unknown origin, as nothing close to this word exists in Latin or Ancient Greek. It is speculated that it derives from Celtic "all", meaning "pungent, burning, hot" referring to the taste. Latin "trifoliatum" means "three-leafed".

At least 21 species and subspecies of the Allium genus have been recorded in the wild, Cypriot habitat.

This dwarf species of Allium produces white flowers with a small pink tone. It is shorter and the flowers smaller in regards to Allium neapolitanum. It prefers well-drained soil open to the sun. Even though it is not a popular plant, it is encountered all around Cyprus at a low altitude of up to 300 metres. Allium trifoliatum's flowering period is between March and May.
