Allium junceum

Άλλιο το βουρλοειδές

Etymology of Allium junceum: The generic name "Allium" is of unknown origin, as nothing close to this word exists in Latin or Ancient Greek. It is speculated that it derives from Celtic "all", meaning "pungent, burning, hot" referring to the taste. "Junceum" means "rush-like", referring to the shoots, which show a passing resemblance to those of the rush genus Juncus, from where the species's epithet derives.

At least 21 species and subspecies of the Allium genus have been recorded in the wild, Cypriot habitat.

Allium junceum is an uncommon plant in the Cypriot habitat. It appears in southern Cyprus and in the Kerynia district, at a maximum altitude of 875 metres. Allium junceum mostly grows on open, uncultivated land. Its flowering period is between March and May.
