Smyrnium olusatrum

Σμύρνιο το μαυρολαχανικό, αγριοσέλινο, αγριόσμερνο, μαυροσέλινο, σμυρνιά

Etymology of Smyrnium olusatrum: The genus name "Smyrnium" derives from Ancient Greek "σμύρνα" [smýrna], meaning "myrrh". The epithet "olusatrum" comes from Latin "olus", meaning "garden herb, and "ater", meaning black, hence "the garden herb with the black seeds".

Three Smyrnium species exist in the Cypriot habitat.

Smyrnium olusatrum is one of the three Smyrniums found in Cyprus and the only one in low-level areas in the Limassol district. It is distinguished from the others by its celery-like leaves. It can grow up to 1.5 metres.  Smyrnium olusatrum, which basically grows all around Cyprus except in the Akamas region, is a very common plant and it can be found in streambanks, wet places or under the shade of trees, at an altitude up to 600 metres. Smyrnium olusatrum's flowering time is between February and April.
