Φασσόχορτο, Πράσιον το μείζον
Etymology of Prasium majus: Its name was used since antiquity, but no one knows for certain the etymology of "Prasium", beyond the fact that it has Ancient Greek origin. Some speculate that the genus's name means "green", and indeed the word "πράσιον" [prasion] appears in Plato's "Timaeus dialogue" as early as 360 BC: "...κυανοῦ δε λευκῷ κεραννυμένου γλαυκόν, πυρροῦ δε μέλανι πράσιον". In this sentence "μέλανι πράσιον" is translated as "green ink". If "green" is the answer this is probably because of the vivid green color of Prasium majus's leaves, the "green plant". "Majus" is Latin and means "larger".
There is one and only Prasium species/kind in the world, and this is Prasium majus.
Prasium majus appears all-around Cyprus up to a maximum altitude of 450 metres, and it primarily grows on rocky ground. Its flowering period is between January and May.
